Former Bihar Governor Ramkrishna Suryabhan Gavai passed away

Veteran leader of the Republican Party of India Ramkrishna Suryabhan Gavai passed away on 25 July 2015 after suffering brain haemorrhage. He was 86. He is survived by a wife, two sons and a daughter.

He was known for his close association with Babasaheb Ambedkar and was one of the chosen volunteers of Ambedkar when the latter embraced Buddhism along with thousands of his followers at the Deekshabhoomi in 1956. Gavai was also the chairman of the Deekshabhoomi Smarak Samiti in Nagpur.

It was to Gavai’s credit that the Deekshabhoomi turned into a world class memorial to Ambedkar and his historic conversion to Buddhism. 

In 1998, Gavai was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha from Amravati Lok Sabha constituency, and in June 2006 he became Governor of Bihar and was also acting Governor of Sikkim for a brief period. On 26 June 2008, Gavai was appointed as Governor of Kerala and completed his term on 25 August 2011.

 

16th Anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas observed across the country

The 16th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas observed across the nation on 26 July 2015. On this day in 1999 Indian Army defeated Pakistan Army in the Kargil War.

The observance of the day in 2015 was marked with paying tribute to Kargil War heroes by laying a wreath at Amar Jawan Jyoti in Delhi by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and three service chiefs - Army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha and Navy chief Admiral RK Dhowan.

Besides, Army personnel also paid tribute to the war heroes at Dras War Memorial, Kargil district in Jammu and Kashmir.

Background

The 73-day Kargil War fought during May – July 1999 between India and Pakistan saw Indian forces come out victorious against the intruders and taking back all the occupied strategic positions in Kargil and Dras sector.

The conclusion of the war saw claiming of 500 officer and soldiers of whom four, viz., Captain Vikram Batra (posthumous) Lt. Manoj Kumar Pandey (posthumous), Rifleman Sanjay Kumar and Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav were awarded Param Vir Chakra, the highest gallantry award of India.

The war was also called Operation Vijay, which was the name of the Indian operation that cleared the Kargil sector.

Veteran Congress leader Bijoy Krishna Handique passed away

Six times Lok Sabha member Bijoy Krishna Handique passed away on 26 July 2015 at the Jorhat Medical College Hospital in Assam following brief illness. He was 82. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

Handique was first elected to Assam Legislative Assembly in 1972, he then became a member of All India Congress Committee in 1973 and then served as Congress Working Committee member in 2002. 

Born in 1934, Handique was first elected to Lok Sabha from Jorhat, Assam in 1991, and continued to win in six successive elections from the same constituency until he lost to Kamakhya Prasad Tasa of the Bhartiya Janata Party in 2014.

He had also served as a Rajya Sabha member from 1980 to 1986. He also served as Minister of State for Defence and Parliamentary Affairs (2004-2007), Minister of chemicals and fertilizers (2006-2009). In 2009, he became Minister of State for mines of Northeastern region and served there till 2011.

PR Chari, the nuclear disarmament advocate, died

PR Chari, the ardent nuclear disarmament advocate, died on 24 July 2015 in New Delhi. He was 79.

Known for promoting a consensual approach on the nuclear issue, he was a world-class and very wise strategic thinker.

He was a former IAS officer who served two terms in the Defence Ministry and was also a former Director of the Institute of Defence and Strategic Analysis (IDSA) from 1975 to 1980.

After retiring from the service in 1992, he took to writing extensively on the subject of disarmament. According to the IDSA website, he published more than 1400 op-ed articles and more than 130 monographs and major papers abroad and in India.

In one of his last papers written for Carnegie Endowments, he critiqued India's nuclear doctrine, faulting it for "lack of transparency" and "focus of objectives", and called for a full review of it.

PR Chari was also a co-founder of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies in Delhi, and mentored scholars there till the end.

 

Team Sky cyclist Chris Froome of Britain won 102nd Tour de France

Chris Froome, a cyclist from Team Sky of Britain, on 26 July 2015 won 102nd Tour de France in a three-week slog of furious race around the Champs Elysees, Paris. With this, Froome became the first Briton to win the Tour de France for the second time.

Froome made his mark in the mountain stage to La Pierre St Martin in the 10th stage before riding defensively to leave behind Nairo Quintana Rojas, a Colombian racing cyclist, by 72 seconds. The third-place was secured by Alejandro Valverde, cyclist from Spain.

The Team Sky now has three victories in its pocket. The first vistory was marked by former Team Sky leader Bradley Wiggins claiming the 2012 edition, followed the two victories of Froome in 2013 and 2015. British riders now have three Tour de France victories out of the last four Grand Boucles.

Froome first won in 2013, when Nairo Quintana was again the runner-up, although Quintana lost by a much smaller margin that is 1 minute, 12 seconds; one of the tightest win since 2008.

EU banned marketing of around 700 generic medicines of GVK Biosciences

The European Union (EU) on 25 July 2015 banned the marketing of around 700 generic medicines manufactured by India's pharmaceutical research company GVK Biosciences. These medicines will be banned in 28 member countries of European Union.

This is the largest suspension imposed on the sales and distribution of generic drugs and it will come into effect from 21 August 2015.

With this ban, 700 generic medicines will lose their validity for use in the EU and now they will not be distributed or sold by pharmaceutical companies, drugs stores, wholesale dealers and other outlets.

Reason of banning these generic medicines

The European commission took decision to ban around 700 generic medicines in response to a recommendation given by the EU’s nodal drug regulator European Medicines Agency (EMA) in January 2015.

In its recommendations, EMA had mentioned that the marketing authorisations of these drugs were based on clinical trial data which was allegedly manipulated by the Hyderabad -based pharmaceutical research company GVK Biosciences.

EMA's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use examined the marketing authorisation given to over 1000 generic drugs on the basis of bio-equivalence studies conducted by GVK Bio during the period between 2004 and 2014. The inspections showed systematic manipulation of clinical trial data.

 

Gujarat HC constituted panel to ensure amenities to labourers at Alang ship-breaking yard

Gujarat High court on 25 July 2015 constituted a four-member panel to ensure basic amenities like housing and hospital for labourers at Alang ship-breaking yard in Bhavnagar district following a public interest Litigation.

The panel will comprise of Secretary of State Health department as chairman, District Collector of Bhavnagar, Deputy General Manager of Gujarat Maritime Board and a representative of Ship Recycling Industries Association of India. 

The panel will be directed to examine the aspect of starting of the hospital at the earliest by Maritime Board itself or through Employee’s State Insurance Corporation. 

The court also asked for a report from the panel with regard to construction and allotment of 1000 housing units for labourers. The committee can take help of any government agency. The panel was asked to submit the report by 5 August 2015. 

The PIL was filed by a resident of Bhavnagar city stating that the laborers at Alang ship breaking yard lack facilities like proper residential accommodation, hospitals for emergency medical treatment and sanitation which are guaranteed under the labour laws. The PIL also sought proper coastal security and control of pollution.

 

Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel of Germany won Hungarain Formula One Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel of Germany and the Ferrari driver on 26 July 2015 won theHungarian Formula One Grand Prix in Budapest. This was Vettel’s second win of the season and it came only days after the funeral of the Mercedes French former test driver Jules Bianchi.

Also, this win was Vettel’s 41st overall, putting him level with the late triple champion Ayrton Senna on the all-time list, and first in Hungary.

The second and third place was taken by Red Bull driver Daniil Kvyat of Russian and Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo of Australia respectively.

Although the leader of the 2015 F1 season Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain came in at sixth position but he still remained on top of the overall drivers standing with 202 points.

In the constructers standing, Mercedes leads the board with 383 points followed by Ferrari and Williams at second and third position respectively.

World's largest flower Amorphophallus Titanum bloomed at Jindai Botanical Gardens in Tokyo

World’s largest flowerAmorphophallus Titanumbloomed for the first time in 5 years in the fourth week of July 2015 at the Jindai botanical gardens in Tokyo, Japan.

The flower Titan arum measuring 2-meter (6.5 feet) in height rarely flowers and is notoriously difficult to propagate.

It is commonly called the corpse flower because it smells like rotting meat that helps attract pollinators such as beetles and flies. Moreover, it only last for few days.

It is native to the rainforests of western Sumatra in Indonesia, the flower grows on steep hillsides between 120 to 365 meters (400 to 1200 feet) above sea level but its existence is now under massive threat from widespread deforestation.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified the species as "vulnerable", just below endangered.

Union Government sanctioned 1000 crore rupees for Indo-Bangla Rail Link

Union Government on 25 July 2015 sanctioned 1000 crore rupees for the laying of 15.06 km long tracks to connect Indian Railways with Bangladesh through the North East.

The Indo-Bangla Rail link would be completed by 2017 and the entire route will be constructed by IRCON.

Out of 15.06 km length connecting Agartala with Akhaura railway junction in Bangladesh, 3.7 km would comprise of elevated corridor.

The completion of the project would reduce the distance from Agartala to Kolkata from 1650 km to 515 km and difficult hilly terrain could be avoided.

It will also improve trade and commerce between the North-East region of India and Bangladesh and enhance people to people contact

The project is the result of discussion between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina during the Modi’s visit to Dhaka from 6 June to 7 June 2015.

Mexico defeated Jamaica to win CONCACAF Gold Cup Football tournament

Mexico on 26 July 2015 defeated Jamaica 3-1 in the final of CONCACAF Gold Cup football tournament to win the regional tournament for the record seventh time. The final was played at Philadelphia, US.

From the EL Tri side (nickname of Mexican football team), the goals were scored by Captain and midfielder Andred Guardado, forward Jesus Corona and forward Oribe Peralta, while Darren Mattocks scored the lone goal for Jamaica in the 78th minute.

In the semi-finals, Mexico had defeated Panama while Jamaica, the first Caribbean nation to reach the Gold Cup's final, defeated the United States to reach the final of the Gold Cup.

The third place was taken by Panama whereas the US, the host and the winner of 2013 Gold Cup, finished a dismal fourth in the tournament.

With this win, Mexico will face the US, on 9 October 2015 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, for CONCACAF'S spot in the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.

Andred Guardado was voted top player of the tournament for scoring 4 goals in the tournament.

The CONCACAF Gold Cup is the signature tournament of the North American, Central American and Caribbean region.

CONCACAF stands for Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football which was founded in 1961. Its member includes the nations of three regions and independent nations of Guyana and Suriname and the French department of French Guiana.

 

Former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam passed away

Former Indian President Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen (APJ) Abdul Kalam passed away on 27 July 2015 following his collapse during a lecture in the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong. He was 83. He was also known as the Missile Man of India.

Considered as the People's President, Dr Kalam became the 11th President of the country and occupied the post between 2002 and 2007 during the NDA government headed Atal Bihari Vajpayee. After relinquishing the charge of President of India, he relentlessly taught science to the youth of India.

Kalam was one of India’s most eminent scientists and had the unique honour of receiving honorary doctorates from 30 universities and institutions.

About Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam

  • Born on 15 October 1931 at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, APJ Abdul Kalam went on to become Aeronautical Engineer from Madras Institute of Technology, Chennai.
  • After graduating in 1960, he joined DRDO as a scientist. He started his career by designing a small helicopter for the Indian Army.
  • In 1969, Kalam was transferred to ISRO, where he was project director of India's first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III).
  • He also served as the Chief Scientific Adviser to then Prime Minister and as the secretary of the DRDO from July 1992 to December 1999.
  • He has been awarded with the coveted civilian awards including Padma Bhushan (1981) and Padma Vibhushan (1990) and the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna (1997).
  • Kalam authored numerous inspirational books including India 2020, Wings Of Fire and Ignited Minds.

Kalam's Contributions towards scientific developments in India

  • During his tenure as Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister from July 1992 to December 1999, he led the weaponisation of strategic missile systems and the Pokhran-II nuclear tests, which made India a nuclear weapon state.
  • In 1980, India entered the space club by putting the Rohini satellite in the near earth orbit with the first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III), developed under the stewardship of Kalam.
  • In the 1960s, Kalam was at the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station near Thiruvananthapuram, where he built ISRO's sounding rocket programme to probe the upper atmosphere.
  • His taking over of Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-3) programme as its Project Director led to its spectacular success in 1980.
  • As director of DRDL, he envisioned India's Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) and led teams that built India's Agni, Akash, Prithvi and Nag missile programmes.
  • He was instrumental in forging India's collaboration with Russia to build the world's first supersonic cruise missile called BrahMos.

Santasilan Kadirgamar, the veteran Sri Lankan historian, passed away

The veteran historian of Sri Lanka Santasilan Kadirgamar died on 25 July 2015 after a brief illness. He was 81.

As a historian he was more inclined towards Left movement and began his movement as a sympathiser of the Lanka Sama Samaj Party.

He was among those who were instrumental in setting up theMovement for Inter-Racial Justice and Equality (MIRJE - Jaffna) and the Jaffna Citizens’ Committee in 1970s and 1980s.

As an author, Kadirgamar is remembered for his work on the history and impact of the short-lived Jaffna Youth Congress in 1980. The Youth Congress stood for egalitarian and democratic principles.

Some of his works included The Tamils of Lanka: Their Struggle for Justice and Equality with Dignity and The Left Tradition in Lankan Tamil Politics.

He was born in Chavakachcheri of Jaffna in April 1934 and his cousin was former Sri Lankan Foreign Affairs Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, who was assassinated in August 2005.

 

Terrorist attacked Dinanagar town of Gurdaspur in Punjab killing seven people

Dinanagar town in Gurdaspur district of Punjab was in news in July 2015 as on 27 July 2015 it witnessed a terrorist attack that killed seven people including 4 policemen.

The terrorist attack was the first such attack in Punjab in two decades or since the end of Khalistani terrorism in 1980s.

All the terrorists were killed by the special units of the Punjab Police SWAT after fierce gunbattle lasting over 11 hours.

Dinanagar town, which is just 12km from the India-Pakistan border, is located 25km from the Jammu and Kashmir border and 235km from Chandigarh.

Ram Sevak Sharma appointed as Chairman of TRAI

Ram Sevak Sharma was on 27 July 2015 appointed as the Chairman of telecom regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). He succeeded Rahul Khullar who had retired in May 2015.

Sharma is also set to retire in September 2015 as a Secretary for Department of Electronics and Information Technology. Ram Sevak Sharma is an IAS officer of 1978 batch, Jharkhand Cadre.

He has worked as Chief Secretary of the Jharkhand government and had also worked in the Department of Economic Affairs dealing with bilateral and multilateral development agencies like World Bank and Asian Development Bank. 

He did his Post graduation from IIT Kanpur and a Masters in Computer Science from the University of California (USA).

Nepal’s political parties agreed to remove word ‘Secularism’ from the Constitution

Nepal’s political parties on 27 July 2015 agreed to remove the word “secularism” from the yet-to-be framed Constitution. They agreed to this during a discussion on peoples’ view vis-à-vis the new constitution in the Constituent Assembly.

The political parties reached the consensus on this after a majority of people in their feedback to the new constitution demanded for replacing the word “secularism” by either “Hindu” or “religious freedom.” Over 80 per cent of Nepal’s population is Hindu.

Nepal was declared a secular country in 2007 after Nepal’s Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist joined mainstream politics after a decade-long insurgency that killed over 13000 people. The decision had ended Nepal’s century-old identity as the world’s only Hindu kingdom.

The proposed framework of Nepal’s Constitution provides for federal structure, form of governance, electoral and judicial systems. Major political parties of Nepal agreed to this on 9 June 2015.

The final draft of the constitution, which must be approved by a two-thirds parliamentary majority, is expected to be ready by July 2015.

Rajesh Exports acquired Switzerland-based world’s largest gold refinery Valcambi

Indian gold jewellery major Rajesh Exports Limited (REL) on 27 July 2015 announced the acquisition of Switzerland-headquartered world’s largest gold refining company Valcambi.

It acquired European Gold Refineries, the 100 per cent holding company of Valcambi through its fully-owned subsidiary in Singapore in all cash deal of 400 million US dollars (around 2560 crore rupees).

The acquisition would help RIL expand the global gold business and will add significantly to the revenues and profitability of REL group during the coming years.

The acquisition is also of national importance for India, as India is the largest consumer of gold in the world.

REL claims to be the largest manufacturer of gold jewellery and gold products. It has the world’s largest jewellery manufacturing facility at Bengaluru with a capacity to make 250 tonnes of gold jewellery and gold products per annum.

Noted Physicist P Hariharan passed away

Eminent physicist P Hariharan died on 26 July 2015 in Berkeley, California. He was 89. He is survived by a son and a daughter.

Hariharan had contributed in various researches including in the design of a new 3-beam interferometer, first practical radial-shear interferometer and double passed Fabry-Perot interferometer. 

He was the first physicist to apply digital phase-shifting techniques to holographic interferometry in order to measure strains and vector displacements. He had also developed multicolour rainbow holograms and improvised multicolour reflection holograms.

About P Hariharan

• Born on 24 December 1926, Hariharan had worked at New Delhi based National Physical Laboratory (NPL) from 1949 to 1951 and at the Ottawa based National Research Council (NRC) from 1951- 1954.
• He had received a PhD (doctorate) for his work on photographic resolving power. 
• He was awarded with the Joseph Fraunhofer Medal of the Optical Society of America, Walter Boas Medal of the Australian Institute of Physics and Thomas Young Medal of the Institute of Physics, London for his works.
• Hariharan had also authored 4 books and published more than 200 research papers.

Ashish Bahuguna appointed as Chairman of food safety regulator FSSAI

Ashish Bahuguna was in the fourth week of July 2015 appointed as the Chairman of food safety regulator Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

His tenure will be of three years and he succeeded K Chandramouli whose tenure ended in January 2015. Since then the position was lying vacant and the Health Secretary Bhanu Pratap Sharma was given the interim charge of chairman of FSSAI.

Bahuguna is a 1978-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Rajasthan cadre who retired from the post of Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture in February 2015.

Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare is the Administrative Ministry for the implementation of FSSAI.

Swati Maliwal took charge as Chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women

Swati Maliwal on 28 July 2015 took charge as the Chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), along with three other members. Her appointment was approved by Lt Governor Najeeb Jung. Maliwal, an RTI activist, succeeded Barkha Singh.

Maliwal had taken charge as the DCW's Chief on 20 July 2015 itself, but her appointment was struck down by the Lt Governor Najeeb Jung at that time.

Maliwal is the wife of Aam Aadmi Party leader Navin Jaihind and has been an advisor to Kejriwal on public grievances and handles his Janta Samwad. She has been associated with him since India Against Corruption (IAC) days.

 

Bangladesh part of Sundarbans witnessed rapid decline in tiger population between 2004 and 2015

Bangladesh part of Sundarbans forest witnessed a rapid decline in the tiger population between 2004 and 2015. This was revealed by theTiger Census 2015 in the fourth week of July 2015.

As per the Tiger Census 2015, the number of tigers in Bangladesh part of the Sundarbans declined sharply from 440 in 2004 to 106 in 2015. Sunderbans in Bangladesh are spread over 6097 sq.km and are the only natural habitat of the country.

The fall was attributed to loss of habitat, unchecked wildlife poaching, lack of proper forest management and animal-human conflict in the forest.

The methodology used to conduct the Census 2015 was use of hidden cameras to count tigers as compared to earlier methodology of counting pug marks. This means the number this time are more accurate than past.

The Tiger Census 2015 was conducted by Bangladesh-India Joint Tiger Census Projectand was carried out under Strengthening Regional Cooperation for Wildlife Protection in Asia Project with funding from the World Bank.

Royal Bengal tigerslive mainly in India with smaller populations in Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, China and Myanmar. Out of 2226 Bengal tigers found in India, 74 live in Indian side of Sunderbans, which makes up almost 40 per cent of the world’s largest mangrove forest that straddles 10000 sq. km in India and Bangladesh.

The worldwide Tiger Forum in 2010 declared their collective political will to take all necessary actions to prevent the extinction of wild tigers and increasing global tiger population double by 2022.

Bharti Realty tied-up with Eros Group to develop housing project

Bharti Realty, a Bharti Enterprises' real estate firm, on 27 July 2015 tied up with Eros Group to develop a housing project at Surajkund. As per the tie-up, Bharti Land, the new development arm of Bharti Realty, will develop a smart residential project in Surajkund, south of South Delhi.

Bharti Reality will develop over 2000 apartments in this project, covering about 5.2 million sq ft of area. The land size is about 50 acres, owned by Eros group which is into real estate, hospitality, entertainment and education businesses. 

The housing project will also have an eminent school, a renowned healthcare facility, a neighbourhood shopping area along with other social amenities like clubs, sports facilities, etc.

Bharti Realty, the subsidiary of Sunil Bharti Mittal-led Bharti Enterprises, manages around three million square feet of Grade-A commercial real estate space. Currently, it is developing another four million square feet of commercial real estate office space across prominent cities in the country.

The Bharti Group has presence in telecom, agri-business, financial services, retail and real estate among others.
